Asking for Nothing, Just Seating: A Self-Sufficient Life at Antaiji

Antaiji is one of Soto Zen training temples. The practitioners spend about 1,800 hours annually working on zazen meditation, also engaging self-sufficient farming of rice and vegetables. In the last two decades, many practitioners came from over 30 countries, and most of them are young people, struggling to search for the meaning of life. They meditate and try to come closer to their answer through the training at Antaiji.

Ukiyo-e is a Japanese-style drawing that became popular during Edo Period (early 15th to late 17th century.) The government had placed strict regulations on its circulation but popular artists including Utamaro and Kuniyoshi created many hits with unprecedented expressions. This program looks at how Ukiyo-e achieved the great popularity regardless of the government’s opposition.

Following COVID-19 Pandemic, what kind of change will we face? This series will focus on the future of the world and Japan facing the Ongoing crisis. Episode XI and XII focus on the reasons why Japan has still been struggling to find the exit from emergency, while having such highly developed healthcare system. This second part is focusing on facts of hospitals facing the shortage of special beds for COVID-19 patients. Despite having the world’s top number of hospital beds per capita (OECD), Japan has invested medical resources based on the demand of ordinary times, not anticipating emergency situations.

Legendary Sake, Iwaki-Kotobuki: Revival After the Lost Ten Years

Iwaki-Kotobuki is a local Sake rice wine loved by the people of Namie town, Fukushima, for long years. The brewery and the key ingredient, yeast, were lost in Tsunami after the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 2011. This year, the shipment of the products has resumed for the first time in ten years. This is a documentary depicting days of the chief brewer and people who strongly wished its revival.

Yanagiya Kosanji, 81 years old, is an only person designated as Living National Treasure among active Rakugo performers. This is the record of his two months' tour all around Japan performing Rakugo to cheer up people in the time of COVID-19 crisis. He has hurt cervical spine and also suffered from rheumatics but still keeps on telling stories to people.
